what to watch when you're not watching

the TV shows that pass the time between films
1

Hello movie enjoyers. You’re stirring in your room scrolling through every streaming service looking for a film to watch that is the perfect compliment to your mood and expectations of the moment. Although, nothing on your watch list sounds all that appealing. Not only that but, maybe you’re not even in the mood to rewatch one of your favorites.

Here are some of the TV shows I’ve been enjoying while the time passes between films, and most importantly, and what you came here for: why they are worth watching.

On HBO,

If you’ve ever heard of the Michael Peterson trial it’s a dark tale. His wife was discovered at the bottom of the stairs in a brutal scene. It’s infamously referred to as The Staircase.

Toni Collette and Collin Firth star side by side in this masterful eerie recollection of the events that took place the night of The Incident, December 9th, 2001. The fictionalized show carefully follows the events that unfolded in The Netflix documentary of the same name. It’s a bone-chilling, insatiably accurate retelling of a story that feels like it never stops changing.

Is 2022 crime drama The Staircase based on a true story? | NationalWorld

This is Collin Firth like you have never seen him, and Toni Collette in her natural habitat. It’s shocking, it’s wonderfully intentional story-telling, and it’s really fucking great TV. Immerse yourself in what happened that fateful night, but never forget Kathleen Peterson deserved to live a full life.

On Hulu,

I’ve stumbled across yet another Sally Rooney project that makes me both depressed and euphoric all at the same time. It’s called Conversations With Friends. And much like her other absolute hit Normal People, the title is far less threatening than when you press play. Buckle up, there will be tears.

There’s something special about a piece of writing that both surprises and delights you. Something that moves you. Conversations With Friends is a slow burn saga with an unflinching ability to display the most uncomfortable yet salient emotions in a way that is beautifully resonant. At the core of each character, they are just Normal People developing, growing, changing, experiencing alongside each other. Rooney is not one to sugar coat— we see their darkest fears, their disguised secrets and their boring regular days, in a way that feels utterly and completely familiar. The mundane becomes interesting, or maybe it always was.

Conversations With Friends is riddled with authenticity and honesty. It reveals to you that coming of age is forever, we’re always growing into something new and sometimes that means being incredibly unlikable. And other times it means in the midst of your adulthood, you’re reminded of the carefree delight of your adolescence and it saves you.

Every character in this 12-Episode Series will remind you of someone you know or it’ll be like looking into a mirror at yourself. Whatever Sally Rooney fans are called, I’m joining the club.

One More Thing,

In the midst of writing this I did watch Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers on Disney+, and it was seriously hilarious. I can’t stress enough how much fun this was. While John Mulaney, the voice of Chip, is on permanent probation after making a complete ass of himself. This was perhaps a good last contribution to society. I laughed the entire time, and pretty much every famous animated character in the Disney cinematic universe is in it. It’s a multiverse of madness in itself and it’s charismatic all around. C’mon you literally can’t beat a feel good movie, don’t try to pretend you don’t want to watch it at least a little.

Until next time.
